A Facebook Business Page cannot proactively engage visitors with a Messenger popup or message unless the visitor takes a specific action, such as:
- Clicking the Messenger button on the page.
- Interacting with a “Send Message” CTA (Call-to-Action) button on an ad or the page itself.
- Clicking an option like “Learn More”, “Contact Us”, or another Messenger-related button.
Why Facebook Doesn’t Allow Automatic Engagement:
Facebook’s policies are designed to prioritize user control and prevent unsolicited engagement. Visitors must explicitly interact with the Messenger feature to start a conversation or receive messages. This aligns with their focus on privacy and minimizing intrusive experiences.
Workarounds to Increase Engagement:
- Use a Clear Call-to-Action:
- Add a prominent “Send Message” button to your page header.
- Use posts or pinned messages to encourage visitors to reach out via Messenger.
- Ads with Messenger Objectives:
- Run Facebook ads with a Click-to-Messenger objective to drive visitors directly into a Messenger conversation.
Facebook will not auto-engage visitors to a Business Page without user interaction. Any automated interaction requires the visitor’s deliberate action.
